The beautiful fine crazing, the subdued color tone and soft texture are what make this piece so appealing. The clay used is rare Hieda clay. It is made of sandstone, the raw material for glass, and when fired at high temperatures it hardens and develops a rough, powerful earthy flavor. It is this earthy flavor that is the defining feature of Karatsu ware that fascinates so many people. The more you use the sake vessel, the more it changes and becomes more flavorful. Enjoy the process of it nurturing and changing. *Hieda clay is from the Kitahata area at the foot of Mount Kishi in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and the Kitahata area is said to be the birthplace of Karatsu ware.
