Carving Karatsu is a technique unique to Karatsu ware in which an “X” mark is carved into the clay after molding while the clay is still soft, and a feldspar glaze (transparent) is applied. The clay used is from Yamase in Karatsu, known as the clay of old Karatsu, and has a beautiful loquat color. The carvings on the surface of the bowl have a “kairagi” or “plum blossom bark” pattern, which can be enjoyed as a scenic feature. The more the sake cup is used, the more it changes in flavor. Please enjoy the process of growing and changing.
