Carving Karatsu is a technique unique to Karatsu ware in which an “X” mark is carved into the clay after molding while the clay is still soft, and then a feldspar glaze (transparent) is applied. This piece is covered with straw ash glaze, and its mottled Karatsu white and bold carving are a highlight. The base is a shell base and is finished with a double base. The clay used is rare Hieda clay, which is a sandstone material used to make glass, and when fired at high temperatures, it hardens and hardens, producing a rough and strong clay flavor. This clay flavor is the characteristic of Karatsu ware that attracts people. The more the sake cup is used, the more deeply it changes in flavor. Please enjoy the process of growing and changing. The clay of Hieda is from the Kitahata area at the foot of Mt. Kishidake in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, and the Kitahata area is said to be the birthplace of Karatsu ware.
