Shigaraki ware is produced in Koka City, located in the south of Shiga Prefecture, on the border with Mie Prefecture. It is said to have started in the mid-Kamakura period (around the 13th century), and is known for the beauty of the natural glaze created by the unique rough soil and firewood ash. In particular, the firewood ash was melted by the flame, giving it a deep green color. Vidro glaze has captivated many pottery fans.
It was last October that we decided to carry the works of Katsunori Sawa, a popular Shigaraki ware potter. We consulted Mr. Kojima, a Karatsu ware potter who we work with on a daily basis, about additional artists, and he informed us that there was a potter in Shigaraki who created very attractive works. .
Introducing the artist: Katsunori Sawa.
Mr. Sawa mainly produces works of ``Shigaraki ware,'' which has a beautiful strong shape and natural glaze, and ``Oribe ware,'' which is unique and full of playfulness that is unique to Mr. Sawa. Among Sawa's works, ``Yashichida Oribe'' always catches the eye, with its humorous painting and free-spirited lines of bright orange and green, making it a delight for viewers. He is a popular potter who stands out among his contemporaries in both his skill and popularity, and is constantly receiving offers from many department stores and galleries.
