A distinctive feature of Kawakujira is the black rim around the mouth rim. The origin of ``Kawakujira'' is that the black edge of the mouth rim is likened to the skin of a whale (the back), and the white of the body of the vessel is likened to the body (belly) of a whale. The foot ring of the cup is intentionally unglazed so that the original clay flavor, such as the texture of the clay, can be enjoyed. The unglazed areas are transformed by the flames of the kiln, creating a glossy sheen that is one of the highlights of the piece. Each time you use a sake cup, the depth of its flavor increases. Enjoy the fun of growing your own pottery.
Karatsu ware has a rough base, so sudden temperature changes can cause it to crack and break. Avoid using microwaves and dishwashers as they can also damage the dishes.
